Marvel is probably popping still busy popping the champagne corks and celebrating the huge success of Guardians of the Galaxy, but they are also facing fresh questions about their lack of a female superhero movie. So, I write my essay to talk about it.
With the superhero genre continuing to go from strength to strength it really is becoming quite shocking that we have yet to see a female led outing. This is made even more shocking when we realise that 44% of the opening weekend audience for Guardians was in fact female, which is the biggest percentage for a Marvel film to date. And yet women are massively under-represented within the cinematic Marvel Universe.
Now though it looks like this is about to change, and it’s not from Marvel, instead it looks like Sony will be taking its only comic book franchise, Spider-Man and will be giving it a female led spinoff sometime in 2017.
Sony were left a little dissapointed after the incredibly expensive The Amazing Spider-Man 2 failed to reach the studios target of $1 billion earlier this year. That makes the latest Spider-Man film the lowest grossing spidey film yet.
Sony has already put into motion plans to expand their franchise with The Amazing Spider-Man 3 coming in 2016 followed by The Sinister Six and Venom spinoff movies. Those plans have now been revisited, with Sinister Six now with a November 11, 2016 while Spider-Man 3 has been pushed to 2018.
Deadline now reports that the studio is also looking to put together a female superhero movie set within the Spider-Man universe, which is thought to be planned for a 2017 release date.
While we don’t know what female character could lead the film one popular choice is Black Cat, who was played by Felicity Jones and had a small cameo in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
